Blog No. 5

I realize the blogs are following right after each other, but I found this article and it said exactly what I have been thinking - Because of instant news and editing capabilities, no one is really listening to each other.  Read the article "Can We Please Shut Up and Listen" at http://www.comcast.net/articles/sports-general/20100721/Russakoff-Shut-Up-And-Listen/
Now, tell me, what you think - is he right or do you think we need to be careful about offending people?  Do we sensationalize everything so that now the important things do not matter?  After over a week of Lindsey Lohan coverage, the news media says she will only serve two weeks of her 90 day sentence due to jail overcrowding.  I do not mean to sound like Debbe Downer, but I do not understand this fascination with celebrities when real life such as unemployment, inflation, medicare cuts and wars are affecting people we know and love.  Just a thought.

Blog No. 4

How Much is Too Much?
Are people forgetting that what they share on the Internet has the potential of being shared with EVERYONE?  My daughter has a friend who shared on her FB page that the marriage retreat she and her husband had just attended had saved her marriage.  Come to find out, her husband thought everything was fine!  The Russian spy who is now back home supposedly has a large following on FB and is updating her site on a regular basis.  The article, http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100722/tc_afp/russiausspymediainternet
has an interesting take on whether or not we even need spies anymore.  Why pay someone to find out something people share for free?  Social engineering is the act of manipulating people into performing actions or divulging confidential information and is being used for everything from devising terrorist attacks to getting free pizzas!  http://www.social-engineer.org/ is an interesting read for those of you who want to know more.
Questions of the day is:  Do people divulge too much info on the social networking sites and how much do you share?

Blog No. 3

Since your assignment this week has been to write a "research paper," which, by the way, is due this Friday, July 23, I thought it would be timely to blog on this topic.
Have computers made it easier to cheat? My definition of cheating covers the following activities:

 • having someone else do your work

• copying someone else's work

• copying text and pasting it into an essay, research paper, etc. and not giving credit to the original author

• copying music, software, etc. without permission

• representing or misrepresenting yourself as either someone else or with different physical or mental capabilities

• becoming emotionally involved with a person other than your committed partner

So, do you think it is easier to cheat now? Or do you think that people who are going to cheat are going to cheat and those that aren't aren't?
Just wanted to know.

Blog No. 2 It's Not An Addiction, I Can Stop Anytime!

Okay, let's discuss "my friends" who are way too dependent on their computers!  I must admit, I have decided that I do spend too much time on the computer.  Instead of being more organized and less stressed, I find myself almost paralyzed and more stressed!  Visit the following websites:
Are You Suffering from Facebook Addiction and What Is Computer Addiction?.  (Just click on the titles).
Are these  addictions real in your opinion or are they a symptom of our society's new found obsession with addiction?  Tell me what you think!
If you are a SouthPark fan, google the episode about Tiger Woods.  It should be on Hulu by now.
Don't forget to add your name to your comment!

Welcome to Computer Concepts

Blog No. 1

Welcome to Intro to Computer Concepts at Holmes Community College! I do not know how many of you are bloggers or are blog "stalkers," but I do hope you all enjoy this phase of our class. The purpose of the blog is to share opinions, look at the social implications of computer usage, and to make you all more computer savvy.

Every few days I will post a blog on a timely topic. You will be asked to share your opinion. Please be honest. The blog comments are not judged; your grade is based solely on whether or not you responded in the correct format. You are awarded twenty points for each blog response. If you respond to all five blogs, then you have a one hundred test grade. The blogs all together count as one test.

If any of you have a topic you would like me to cover in the blog, please let me know. Until then, visit http://www.blogged.com/directory/ . Visit two of the blogs and tell me what you think. This blog will be "live" until Monday, July 12.
